CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN VIENNA-now or never
If you plan to visit Vienna for the Christmas markets and this is not the first time you come here, check the list of markets below.
This time you have to try something different, something not to crowded or maybe something not so touristic..yes…you have to try them.. some of the markets from the list are very special.
This locations are great and the best thing is that they are not so famous (at least some of them) …this way you can enjoy and take pictures without people standing in front of everything. You just have your space to drink gluwein or try some local food..hehe..
1.Christmas Market at Spittelberg
This one is in a great location, here you have a rich possibility to find a nice place to worm up or just try some local food. (The restaurant Centimeter is very close). This market is spread mainly over 3 narrow alleys: Schrankgasse, Spittelberggasse and Guttenberggasse. All three are romantic and perfectly suitable for a walk in the advent season.
Metro U2 and U3 station Volkstheater
2.Winter Market in the Prater at Riesenradplatz
Yes…I know, this one is also a “must see” if you come to Vienna…especially with the kids or if you love to rise your adrenaline and have some fun in the park. This Christmas market is one of my favorites this year. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday you get into the Christmas spirit with some free live music performances.
Metro U1 and U2 station Praterstern
3.Advent Market by Belvedere Palace
If you like to combine architecture with Christmas markets than you will love this place…but don’t raise your expectation to much…so you won’t be disappointed with this market…It’s nice but it is small…some could say it is nothing to special..you find here a little bit of everything: variety of sweets, punsch, gluhwein, traditional food..but I recommend it..I do like it…go and see for yourself…at least here you have the possibility to take good pictures…hehe..
Metro U1: stop Südtirolerplatz/Hauptbahnhof then take tram 18 or O stop Quartier Belvedere
D: stop Schloss Belvedere
18/O: stop Quartier Belvedere
13A: stop Hauptbahnhof then take tram 18 oder O stop Quartier Belvedere
69A: stop Quartier Belvedere
4.Christmas Market at Stephansplatz
This market has traditional booths offering quality products made in Austria…don’t expect to see to much glitter or to many Christmas decorations…everything is simple but here you are able to have a look at the Christmas lights of the Haas Haus and the Stephansdom. Maybe here your Punsch or Gluhwein has a better taste…you are in a unique location in the inner city …also after a small shopping session on the Kärntnerstrasse you will love to worm up at this market (at least just to check in on Facebook)..hehe
5.Christmas Market and New Year’s Market Schönbrunn Palace
Last year this Christmas market was my favorite…maybe because it was the first Christmas market I visited when I moved to Vienna or just because I visited it at the end of the month and it was not so crowded.. This year I went here only one time and the magic was still there..and also the people..a lot of people..hehe..but we were able to drink our hot punch and enjoy the great scenery of the Schönbrunn Palace.
Metro U4 station Schönbrunn
6.Winter at Museumsquartier (A1)
If you plan to visit the museum of modern art (Mumok) while visiting the Christmas markets, than for sure you will love this hippy market. Beside the cool music that is playing all day, the design is very different from the other Christmas markets: ice pavilions.
If I’ve got your attention just go and see for yourself.
7.Christmas Market Am Hof (C3)
You will love this market if you like to wonder on the streets of Vienna to find new and interesting places. This Christmas market is sponsored by a local radio station, and if I were to come to Vienna this month, for sure I would choose to visit this market…you’ll see why 🙂
Metro U3 station Herrengasse
8.Old Viennese Christmas Market at the Freyung (B3)
9.Advent Market by the Karlskirche (C1)
This market was a little disappointment this year..I’m sorry to write this here…but last year was much better..this year the design is very simple and doesn’t offer a colorful Christmas illustration..still it’s a nice place to visit and drink a punch. Here are some attractions for kids like pony trekking, animal feeding and workshops.
Metro U1, U2 and U4 U-Bahn station Karlsplatz
Enjoy your time in Vienna,
